Urban Insights: Exploring A Successful Housing Model Beyond New Orleans
Hear from a national expert to understand successful models for development beyond the City of New Orleans. This panel will feature a discussion on the tools used to deliver a successful affordable multi-family development. Aspen Lumberyard is a 277 unit, 11 acre, high density, pedestrian friendly, 75% net zero approach to affordable workforce housing that is being made possible through community informed design along with the City of Aspen’s political will and vision to create a great quality of life for the future residents of the Lumberyard neighborhood.
Making it Pencil: Unpacking the Economics of Local Affordable Housing Initiatives in New Orleans
Kathy Laborde, President & CEO of Gulf Coast Housing Partnership, will unpack the economics of a recent affordable housing development in Central City – H3C Apartments and DePaul Community Health Center. Built on the former Brown’s Dairy site, this $80 million dollar complex provides 192 units for low-income residents, in addition to an on-site pharmacy and health clinic. The project involved a variety of funding sources including $26 million from national health care company, Aetna, and $7.3 million from the City of New Orleans.

Local leaders – New Orleans Councilmember Lesli Harris, Bob Rivers with the New Orleans City Planning Commission, and Damon Burns with Finance New Orleans – are driving forward much needed change in the affordable housing field with policy, funding, and innovation. In this panel, attendees will learn about the various pathways to achieve a more equitable housing market for all New Orleanians. Various tools include changes to the local zoning code, dedicated funding streams for affordable housing development, and new models for construction of resilient housing.
