What is UrbanPlan?
A realistic, engaging, and academically challenging classroom-based, web-supported program in which students learn the roles, issues, trade-offs, and economics involved in urban development. It provides our future voters, neighbors, community leaders, public officials, and land use professionals with a hands-on experience in developing realistic land use solutions to vexing urban growth challenges.
How It Works?
“Each student team member chooses one of five roles: finance director, marketing director, city liaison, neighborhood liaison, or site planner. Through these roles, students develop
a visceral understanding of the various market and non market forces and stakeholders in the development process. Students must reconcile competing agendas to create a well-designed project that meets market demands, provides economic returns, and receives public sector and community support. Teams address challenging financial, market, social, political, and design issues; develop a pro forma and three-dimensional model of their plan; and ultimately present their proposal to a “City Council” of ULI members that select the winning team.”
Training will run most of the day and will build upon the additional 4-6 hours of preparation time expected of attendees. After the initial time spent in the classroom volunteers are eligible to work with students from area high schools as well as college students at the undergraduate and graduate level. We are happy to offer another training session this year hoping to build upon the success of last year’s training with Tulane University graduate students. This year we are expanding the program to Newman, Tulane undergrad, as well as it’s second year with the MSRED program.
If you would like to sign up for the training, please contact Katye Fayard at
katye.fayard@uli.org by May 19th.
